Bhagavata Purana - This is why menstruation happens to women
Pauranik Katha about Mensuration: Do you know that the Puranas mention the menstruation occurring to women? There is also a mythological story on why they have menstruation, which is related to Indra Dev. According to a legend described in the Bhagavata Purana, once 'Brihaspati', who was the guru of the gods, became very angry with Indra Dev. Due to this, the Asuras attacked Devaloka and Indra had to leave his throne and run away.
Rescuing himself from the asuras, he reached the creator of the universe, Lord Brahma, and started asking for help from him. Then Brahma ji told him that he should serve a Brahm-gyani, if he is happy then only he will get his throne back. According to ignorance, Lord Indra engaged in the service of a Brahman. But they were unaware that the mother of that learned was an Asura, so she had a special place in her mind for Asuras.
All the Havan material offered by Indra Dev, which is offered to the Gods, he was offering it to the Asuras. This was disrupting all their service. When Indra came to know everything, he became very angry and he killed that Brahmin.
Killing a Guru was a gross sin, due to which the sin of killing Brahma came upon him. This sin began to follow Indra as a terrible demon. Somehow Indra hid inside a flower and meditated on Lord Vishnu for a million years.
Pleased with penance, Lord Vishnu saved Indra Dev but gave a suggestion for the salvation of sin inflicted on him. For this, Indra had to give a small part of his sin to the tree, water, land, and woman. At the request of Indra, everyone agreed but in return, he asked Indra Dev to give him a boon.
First, the tree took one-fourth of the sin for which Indra gave him a boon. According to the boon, if the tree wishes, it can live on its own.
After this, on giving water a part of sin, Indra Dev gave him the power to sanctify other things.
This is the reason that water is still used in worship in the Hindu religion, considering it holy.
Indra Dev gave the third sin to the land and as a boon, he told the land that any injury on him will always heal.
Now the last turn was that of a woman. According to this legend, as a result of giving a part of sin to a woman, she has menstruation every month. But to give them a boon, Indra said that "women will enjoy work many times more than men".
During this time, they are carrying the sin of killing Brahma, that is, they are told to stay away from their Guru and God. This is the reason why women were prohibited from going to the temple during menstruation since ancient times.
